Biography from Butler Institute of American Art:
Dennis Byng (born 1927)

(from a Krasner Gallery press release from 1961)

Mr. Byng is a two-time winner of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship for painting. Recently he has spent several years painting in France and has had a one-man show in Paris. At present Dennis Byng is on the Fine Arts staff of the University of Illinois.

Born in 1927, Byng received his education at the University of Wisconsin. He graduated in 1952 with a Master's Degree in Applied Arts majoring in graphic arts and painting.

In 1956 Byng received a Purchase Award for oil painting from the Butler Institute of American Art and, in 1958, one of paintings was awarded a Purchase Prize from the Philadelphia Museum of Art. He has received purchase prizes for his etchigns from the New York Society of Graphic Artists and the Library of Congress.

Byng's formal canvasses of enigmatic female figures are worked out with infinite precision in tones of muted reds and dusky oranges on a sepia background. The artist is deeply concerned with achieving a precise balance of organic forms and symbols and with building up a luminous jewel-like paint quality. Subtle gradations in value and painstakingly worked surface textures characterize Byng's latest paintings.
