Biography from AskART:
| | Born in Amarillo, Texas, he spent six years as an emergency room doctor, and began to construct forms as an emotional safety valve for what he was seeing. In 1979, he left medical practice to devote himself full time to his mixed media sculpture and house construction. He settled into a small frame house in Holland, Michigan surrounded by his totem-like sculptures of strange, anthropoid figures resembling dolls and whirligigs. They are made from bits of junk and jointed together so their arms and legs move. He sees them as "many voices taking turns," voices that haunt him from his emergency room days. |
