| Born in Decorah, IA, Oct. 7, 1896 and died Manhattan, Kansas on October 28, 1984, Dorothy Barfoot was a painter, blockprinter, ceramist and teacher. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Iowa State University in 1922, a master’s from Columbia College, New York in 1928, and did graduate work at University of Arizona, the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, and the Herron School of Art.
She taught for a year each in Iowa and Minnesota public schools before being named head of the Drake University art department in 1924. She joined the Kansas State College, Manhattan faculty as an Associate professor of art in 1930, was named chair in charge of the home economics art program in 1932, and became professor and head of the art department in 1935. Served as head of the art department at Kansas State for 30 years, stepping down as chair in 1961 and retiring in 1966.
She spent two leaves of absence teaching ceramics and art at the Holmann Institute in Agra, India. She drew the buffalo design used 1933-34 on the cover of Kansas Magazine. | Source:
