EVERETT SHEPPARD BROWN (November 14, 1896 - May 26, 1971)

Landscape painter.  Born in Rising Sun, Maryland.  Brown was the son of Mary Elizabeth Brown (1866-1931) and Edwin F. Brown (b. 1858).  His father was a manufacturer in the dental field.  Everett Brown was one of three sons (William S., Clarence A., Everett S.).  His brother William was artistic as well, working as a music composer.

During World War I he supposedly served in the Army Air Corps.  This cannot be correct, as the Air Corps. did not exist during the first World War.  Rather, he may have served in the Aviation Section, U.S. Signal Corps., which was in existence from July 18, 1914 – May 20, 1918, or the U.S. Army Air Service, which was in existence May 24, 1918 – July 2, 1926.  In either case his service must have been brief.

His first participation in an exhibition appears to have occurred at the Society of Independent Artists in New York City, where in 1917 he showed two, unidentified landscapes.  In 1918 he exhibited another pair at the Society, entitled Tree on the Hill, and Moonlight.  He exhibited at the Society again in 1924 (Storm and White River), 1925 (Still life and Vt. Buildings), and 1926 (no work listed).

Everett Brown first studied at the Art Students League in New York City, sometime before 1917.  Later he continued his education at the art school associated with the National Academy of Design.  In January of 1925 he journeyed to France to further study painting, traveling aboard the S. S. America from Hoboken, New Jersey.  He would specialize in landscape painting, especially of scenes in and around New York City, during the early portion of his career.

After he returned to America, it is believed he remained in New York City until 1936, when he moved to Daytona Beach, Florida.  During the 1940's, like so many artists, he worked in another field, operating what the state called a "cottage court," possibly a type of motel/apartment complex.  In that state he was a long time member of the Art League of Daytona Beach, and eventually served as its president (at the time of his death he was an honorary member of the league, having retired from painting some years before).

Everett Sheppard Brown died on May 26, 1971 in Halifax hospital, Volusia County, Florida.  His service was handled by the Henry A. Quarterman Chapel and he was buried at Bellevue Memorial Park, Daytona, Florida.

At this time (2009) none of his works are known to be in any public collections, though a number reside in private hands.
