Son of Meyer Braunthal (1836-1914) and Lea  Scheindel Papernik (1847-1886), he was born in Vienna, Austria on March 24, 1873. Braunthal married Frederike Therese on January 6, 1906 in Vienna and was remarried in 1918, after their divorce, to Emma Margarethe Paak, who died in Hamburg in 1968.

Eduard Otto von Braunthal was born in Vienna in 1873. There he studied at the Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt under Joseph Eugene Hörwarter.  From 1893 to 1899 he attended the Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied with Franz Rumpler and Eduard Peither von Lichtenfels.  At the beginning of the 20th century he traveled to Italy, Sardinia and Crete. 

During the First World War he worked as a war artist.  He regularly exhibited his genre scenes and portraits in the Künstlerhaus in Vienna from 1905. (cru)
