Son of Meyer Braunthal (1836-1914) and Lea Scheindel Papernik (1847-1886), he was born in Vienna, Austria on March 24, 1873. Braunthal married Frederike Therese on January 6, 1906 in Vienna and was remarried in 1918, after their divorce, to Emma Margarethe Paak, who died in Hamburg in 1968.
