This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Ely Maxim Bahar was born in Normandy, France in 1890 and was educated in France, England, Switzerland and the United States.
 
His education was at the City College of New York, the Art Students League in New York City and at the Académie Colarossi in Paris.  Individual instructors included John F. Carlson and Charles W, Hawthorne.

Although born abroad, he served as a first lieutenant in US Army Intelligence during the First World War.

Behar exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; he was a member of the Rockport Art Association.

He was a painter, illustrator and teacher.  Media included watercolor and oils.  At the time of his death, he was an art instructor at Theodore Roosevelt High School in New York and Vice President of the Staten Island Museum.  He was a resident of Staten Island for twenty years.

He died in 1951 at Staten Island of a heart ailment and is buried at Arlington Cemetery.
