| Born in Nashua, New Hampshire on Jan. 22, 1875, Ernest Batchelder studied at Massachusetts Normal School, Harvard Summer School of Design, and Birmingham (England) School of Arts & Crafts.
After moving to California, he joined the department of arts and crafts at the Throop Polytechnic Institute (Pasadena) in 1902 and for several years taught there during winters and at Handicraft Guild Summer School in Minneapolis where Grant Wood was one of his pupils.
Batchelder opened the School of Design & Handicraft in the Arroyo Seco in Pasadena in 1909; he was active there until his firm failed during the Depression. His forte was interior furnishings in metal, tile, and enamel.
He was author of The Principles of Design (1904) and Design in Theory and Practice (1910).
He died in Pasadena on Aug. 6, 1957. | Source:

| Ernest Batchelder established a tile studio in Pasadena, California, in 1909 and expansion soon followed. In 1916 Batchelder built a larger factory with a new partner. The Batchelder-Wilson Company made all types of architectural tiles, garden pots, and bookends. That plant closed in 1932.
In 1936 Batchelder opened Batchelder Ceramics, also in Pasadena, and made bowls, vases, and earthenware pots. He retired in 1951 and died in 1957.
Pieces are marked Batchelder Pasadena or Batchelder Los Angeles.
