Blanke, Esther (1882-1978)
Painter, crafts worker, Metalsmith and designer, born Feb. 2, 1882 in Chicago to George F. Blanke, a noted Superior Court judge, and Marie Antonette Blanke. She studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and in Munich, Germany and London, England. She painted watercolors, and her work was exhibited in Chicago as late as 1965 and 1966, according to press coverage at the time. Esther was the sister of Marie Elsa Blanke, a famous Chicago artist and university instructor who was in the vanguard of the Arts and Crafts Movement. Both women were active in Chicago’s art culture throughout their lives. Esther was a member of the Cordon Club, the Arts Club of Chicago, and the Artists’ Guild of Chicago. She died in Evanston, Illinois in 1978.
