Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Evelyne Bessell became a portrait and still life painter and art teacher from 1927 to 1939 at the Houston Museum School of Art.
She studied at Rice Institute in Houston; the Pennsylvania Academy in Philadelphia with Daniel Garber, Joseph Pearson, and Arthur Carles; and the Art Institute of Chicago with Gertrude Hadley, Ivan Chikovsky, and Elmer Forsberg. She also studied in Mexico with John Clark Tidden.
