| Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Evelyne Bessell became a portrait and still life painter and art teacher from 1927 to 1939 at the Houston Museum School of Art.
She studied at Rice Institute in Houston; the Pennsylvania Academy in Philadelphia with Daniel Garber, Joseph Pearson, and Arthur Carles; and the Art Institute of Chicago with Gertrude Hadley, Ivan Chikovsky, and Elmer Forsberg. She also studied in Mexico with John Clark Tidden.
Bessell was a member of the Associated Artists of Houston, the Southern States Art League, and the Texas Fine Arts Association. She exhibited widely including the Philadelphia Watercolor Club, the Pennsylvania Academy and in Texas with the Southern States Art League and other Texas organizations.
