This biography from the Archives of AskART:
The following, submitted November 2004, is from Kathleen Grimes Barber.

"I recently purchased three woodblock prints. One was signed "Harold Haven Brown" and the other two were signed "Florence Bradshaw Brown". Harold's print was titled " Old Cape Cod Windmill, Yarmouth, Mass ". Florence's were titled,"Parrot" and "Elephant". Since I purchased them together I wondered what the artists' relationship might be.

I went to Falk's, "Who was Who in American Art" (1985). There I noted one of the positions held by Harold Haven Brown was director of John Herron Art Institute Indianapolis. (It also noted his Provincetown connection and one of his specialties as block prints) I then looked for Florence in the same reference. I noted her Provincetown connection and noted that she exhibited with the American Society of
Miniature Painters.

Next I checked the census for Mass. and didn't locate them. I then tried the 1920 census for Indiana. That's where I located Harold H Brown age 50, occupation director art institute, born in Ma.(Falk noted he was born in Malden Ma) His wife was listed as Florence age 50, occupation miniature painter, born in SC.

I then went to the 1880 Malden, Ma census to rule out Harold having a sister of the same name. He showed up as age 11 living with his maternal grandmother, father and cousins, no sister showing. I then searched the 1880 census for Florence under Bradshaw as a maiden name. I found a Florence Bradshaw age 12 ( her birthday could have been in the first part of the year). It showed her place of birth as SC while her three younger brothers were born in NJ. I would still like a marriage certificate or possibly birth records of Harold and Florence's daughters (it would show the mother's maiden name.)
