| The following, submitted May 2004, is from Dr. Bob Bowie, relative of the artist. Frank L. Bowie is listed in the Portland Directory 1874-78, as clerk living at 42 Howard.
His marriage to Miss Rosa F. Rumery, Deering was June 10, 1890 .
Frank L. Bowie is listed in the 1912 Portland Maine Directory as a shipping clerk, with home on 28 Locust Street. He was an artist who painted for 45 years in Portland, having studied under Hudson and Charles Fox and at the Cox Art School, Boston. In later years he was custodian of the Sweat Art Museum, Portland. (Ellis, 1962 p. 27).
FRANK LOUVILLE BOWIE (1857-1936) was a member of the Brush-Ins (also found The Brush'uns) a Portland Maine group of artists which also included Walter Gay. Bowie knew Winslow Homer. I have a photocopy of an old newspaper article about an exhibition at the Portland Art Museum in which his work was hung. It pictures Bowie as the Secretary of the Portland Society of Art. In 1926, Bowie was given a one-man exhibition at the museum. His father died in a train accident with other family in 1902 at the Grand Trunk Crossing, Pownal, Maine.
