This biography from the Archives of AskART:
The following biography, submitted November 2004, is from the artist, Franz Brown, now living in Hot Springs, South Dakota:

Franz Brown, born 1950 in Yonkers, NY, began photographing when he was about 16 years old. His father Reynold Brown, a movie poster illustrator, gave him instruction on how to use a camera. His mother, Mary Louise Tejada Brown was a pastel artist.

Franz was the third of eight children. He grew up in Southern California where he graduated from Damian High School in La Verne, California in 1968. He went to the University of Washington where he earned a BA Degree in Russian Area Studies. Upon graduation in 1972, he received a commission as Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps.

He spent seven and a half years in the Marine Corps as a Communications Officer and served in California, Okinawa and Hawaii. After leaving the Marines in 1980, he attended California State University, Northridge, where he received a Masters Degree in Mass Communications in 1987 with an emphasis on photography. He has since been doing free-lance work as a writer and photographer, specializing in the arts.

Brown took up painting as a supplement to photography, despite the absence of formal art training. Growing up in the countryside led to his desire to paint landscapes. He also includes in his paintings human behavior, illustration, and history.

His articles have appeared in "Southwest Art Magazine", "US Art" and "Outdoor Photographer". He also manages the Tejeda Brown Family collection of art by Reynold Brown and Mary Louise Tejeda Brown and assists in the preparation of museum exhibits and shows utilizing that work. He assisted in the organization of materials for "The Man Who Drew Bug-Eyed Monsters" a television documentary on the life and art of Reynold Brown which appeared on National Public Television and AMC. He is currently preparing a two year touring show to open in 2002, a retrospective on Reynold Brown.
