This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Frederick W. Boulton  1904 -1969

Frederick Boulton studied at the Chicago Art Institute. American Academy of Art, Chicago, Academy Julian, Paris, and was a student of John Norton, C.O. Woodbury, and Joseph Allworthy.

The artist's varied experience included painting trips to Europe, North Africa, Cuba, South America and the Caribbean Islands. He exhibited in the Chicago Art Institute of International Water-Color Exhibition, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Lyman Allyn Museum, Wustum Museum of Fine Art, North Shore artist's Exhibitions, American Water-Color Society, Chicago Art Directors Fine Arts Shows and the Arts Club of Chicago.

In June 1923, Boulton joined the Chicago office of J. Walter Thompson Company, advertising agency, where he had a summer job to earn tuition for his second year of study at the Chicago Art Institute. Forty-two years later, in 1965 Boulton retired from J. Water Thompson as Senior Vice President and Director of Creative Service, heading up the Chicago Arts Department.

To this day one of the most recognized works of Boulton is the S train station logo he designed for  Wausau Insurance Co. Boulton lived in the Chicago area most of his creative years and did a series of oil and water color works focusing on train travel.

In 1955, during his career at J. Walter Thompson, Boulton was elected "Art Director of the Year" by the National Society of Art Directors whose competition included Walt Disney. Frederick Boulton's interest in fine art never wavered as he consistently studied and painted.

In 1965 when he retired, Bouton was quoted as saying his future plans were "to return to do what I started to do in 1922 (before being waylaid by the advertising busness and economic necessity) to paint and draw and experience the joys and frustrations of the finer arts."

A partial list of Boulton's  works include: Phillipsburg, D.W.I., Stop Look & Listen, Art Fair Lake Forest, Pink House Cuba, Artist's Studio, Breakthrough, Holiday in Brighton, a series of Japanese Gyotka Fish Prints , Pink Cottage Siesta Key, Notre Dame in Spring, Senior Rodriguez Cuba, Main Street Kentucky, Paris Flowers, Woodruff Church, St. Vincents Waters, Market Place Curaso, W.I., Homemaker Tobago, The Hunter Returns Home, I love Paris in the Spring Time and Clovelly England.

Submitted by Donnalyn Burch, niece of the artist.  Her source was a Memorial Exhibit Program of Frederick W. Boulton by the J. Walter Thompson Company.
