| Freeman Butts is said to have brought abstract expressionism to Montana. He was known for his expressive flowing paint and the vivacious way he embraced life. He created luscious paintings of landscapes and nudes.
Born in 1928 in Los Angeles, Freeman Butts became interested in art at the age of 10. After spending two years in the Navy, Butts enrolled in the Hollywood Art Center School. After quitting art school he worked for Disney Studios.
He was an active and successful part of the Los Angeles art scene through the mid-1970?s when he and his wife Daisy, having raised five children, moved to Bozeman. The pair made many friends, and it is said that they took many a starting artist under their wing.
Daisy said, "Freeman was a strong man with very gentle ways." The couple touched the lives of many in warm and wonderful ways.
Freeman Butts passed away May 23, 1998.
