Gandy Brodie was born in New York City on October 20, 1925 on the lower east side, and was essentially a self-taught artist. He was inspired to paint after seeing Van Gogh's Starry Night , Picasso and Klee at the Museum of Modern Art, all had a influence on his singular "expressionist " style. It's interesting to note that artists like Willen de Kooning and Hans Hoffman had paintings of Brodie's in their personal collections, the Phillips Collection, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and The Museum of Modern Art all hold works by Gandy Brodie in their permanent collections. Brodie rose to prominence in the mid-1950's after exhibiting at the Whitney Museum in New York City in 1954, Annual. He painted and taught in Vermont and in New York City. The signature work of Brodie is his use of heavy impasto in oil paintings.
