|  Born in Hilo, Hawaii, Gare Barks became primarily a commercial artist but painted continuously, completing about six landscapes a year until the late 1960s when she turned full time to her landscape subjects. Her subjects include the California redwoods, Sequoia National Park, the Northwest coast, and landscapes in Texas, New Mexico, Montana and Alaska.
She attended the Punahou Academy in Honolulu and worked as a drafter in her father's architecture firm. She also studied with California painter Millard Sheets during a summer at the University of Hawaii.
From 1937 to 1941, she attended in Boston the Vesper George School of Art and the School of Fine Arts where she studied portraiture. She returned briefly to Hawaii but during World War II moved to southern California and then to the Berkeley area. She became an assistant to Carl Barks, who was writing and drawing "Disney Duck Comics". They married in 1954, and she worked with him until retirement in 1966 and then turned full time to her fine art painting.
In 1983, the couple moved to Grants Pass, Oregon where she died on March 10, 1993.
