Gaston Balande was a painter, watercolourist, and illustrator of a wide
variety of subjects including landscapes, portraits, nudes and
allegorical subjects. Though born in Madrid he lived the majority
of his life in northern France and Paris before taking a position as
curator of the Musee des Beaux Arts in LA Rochelle.
At the turn of the century, and after the first World War, in what is
considered his "dark" period, he painted scenes of social realism with
a sombre palette.
A trip to Belgium, Spain and Italy in 1912 changed the course and the
sombre colours were replaced with a freshened palette and a refined
Post-Impressionist style. From 1945, he devoted himself to
painting landscapes and florals and portraits, with book illustrations
and tapestry design also part of his efforts.
In France he was an exhibitor at the Salon des Artistes Francais, the
Salon des Artists Independants, the Salon des Societe des Nationale des
Beaux Arts and at the Salon des Tuileries. He also exhibited
internationally and can be found in numerous museums throughout France.
He died in Paris in 1971. |
