| Gaston Besson was born in Cholet, France in 1894. At a young age he joined the French Army to serve in World War I. Gaston spent three years as a prisoner of war. Gaston never fully recovered from his injuries and decided to take up painting. After his release he migrated to the United States.
While living in New York, Gaston studied at the Whitney Studio Club and shared many shows featuring his oils and watercolors in the 1920s and 1930s. From 1926 to 1932 he also exhibited in Adelaide Lawson and Hamiton Easter Fields' "Salons Of America" a non-juried, no award art show that flourished from 1922-1936. In 1928 Gaston shared the honors in a four artist exhibit at the G. R. D. Studio, NY with A. Wayne Wilhelm, Lauretta Sondag, and Gertrude Moria Flanagan. Gaston spent his life traveling between New York and Paris.
With failing health Gaston returned to Marseilles, then finally to Paris, where he died in 1969. Gaston usually signed his name Besson. His father was Eugene born in 1860, his mother was Celine Chevalier, his brother was Georges Albert, and his sisters were Svyanne, Marcelle and Marthe.
