This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| The following was submitted by Janet Gwendolyn Smith, art historian from Nebraska: Nebraska
artist Grace Boomer, 1873-1967, was an art teacher and painter in
Beatrice, Nebraska, and then a successful printing business owner in
Lincoln. She was married to George R. Boomer, and was the mother
of 5 children, raising them on her own after her husband's premature
death. Grace Y. Boomer was an art instructor for more than
fifteen years. She contributed to the Women's Art club exhibit in
1924 with an oil painting titled Dream Life. The family art
collection ihas one of her oil on canvases of the Hudson River in the
19th century style of that School of landscape painting. Another
painting in the family collection is of a riverbank in Nebraska.
Lowell Boomer, Grace's son, remembered teasing her when the river
channel changed "Mother you need to fix your painting." Not
only was she an artist, but a very successful businesswoman. She
founded Boomer's Mid-Western Teachers Agency in Lincoln,
Nebraska. Boomer's Printing Company evolved from the need of
printing for her agency. She was successful in suing the United
States Department of Labor for President Roosevelt's teacher's agency
legislation. The attorney representing her in the suit was Lloyd
Marti. All written accounts about Grace Boomer acknowledge the positive
impact she had on the community. The following quote, a tribute to her and the Teacher's Agency, is from The Nebraska Education Journal, June 1924: "Mrs.
Boomer may well be classed among the women who have made good in their
professions. The success of Boomer's Mid-Western Teachers Agency
is entirely due to her conscientious efforts during the past six
years. Mrs. Boomer was a teacher in the Beatrice schools for six
years, and an art instructor for fifteen years. She was one of
the Nebraska artists asked to fill a space in the Women's Art club
exhibit. She contributed Dream Life. Years of experience as a
teacher have given Mrs. Boomer a knowledge of the necessary
qualifications of the teacher, and help her in the business of placing
competent teachers in the schools of this and surrounding states."
