This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| Born in Nordhause, Prussia, Gustavus Behne became a painter of portraits including that of General Sam Houston of Texas. He studied at the Dusseldorf Academy in Germany and then came to the United States, settling first in Reading Pennsylvania. In Philadelphia it is thought he was a student of Thomas Sully.
By 1860, he was in Texas and advertised his portrait services in the Galveston newspaper. He painted residents of that area for several years and then went to Cuba for much of the Civil War.
