Biography from Mayberry Fine Art:
| Henry Eric Bergman was born in 1893 in Dresden, Germany. He graduated with a Diploma of Merit from the Dresden Art and Trade School, where he attended from 1908 to 1911. He apprenticed with a Dresden wood engraver before immigrating to Canada in 1913.
After arriving in Toronto, he found employment at the commercial art firm, Brigden’s. He was soon transferred to Brigden’s Winnipeg office where he specialized in wood engraving* of illustrations for catalogues and business pamphlets. In his free time, Bergman studied at the Winnipeg School of Art*. When wood engraving became obsolete as a commercial form of reproduction, he was reassigned to retouching and photo engraving*. This coincided with his growing interest in fine art and natural subjects.
In 1922, he enrolled in further studies at the Winnipeg School of Art. He continued to focus on his wood engravings, but also developed his skills in painting. Fellow print-maker, Walter J. Phillips encouraged him in his endeavors, as did Frederick Brigden, manager of the firm’s Winnipeg office.
During vacations he traveled in the back woods of Manitoba with Harold Foster. Foster, a fur trader, taught Bergman how to handle a dog team and paddle a canoe. He produced an important engraving entitled, Spirits of the Past, which was acquired by the Art Gallery of Ontario.
Bergman was a member of the Manitoba Society of Artists, and President 1939-40.
He died in Winnipeg in 1958.
