Herbert Barnett is the Dean of the Cincinnati Art Academy, a post which was first held by Frank Duveneck. Herbert Barnett is also an artist who produces dynamic paintings that captivate the viewer's attention in much the same way as the paintings of his illustrious predecessor. In looking at a Barnett painting, there is a certain vibrancy felt between the actual structural lines seen, and the implied structure of interfacial tensions, which seem to result in breathing life into his work.

He recognizes Rembrandt and Cezanne as natural influences, but points out that in the final analysis there is no theory or influence that can create art. Once you work at being an artist, you're on your own.

Herbert Barnett was born July 8, 1910 in Providence, R.I. He started painting at the age of 14. His high school art teacher, Asa G. Randall, encouraged him to study painting at Boothbay Harbor during the summer months under Frank Allen. In the following summers he went to Rockport, Mass. and studied under Aldro Hibbard. While in high school, Herbert also took night classes at the Rhode Island School of Design. He also found time during this period to give private lessons of his own. By the time he was 18, Herbert Barnett had his first one-man show. This was at the Grace Horne Galleries in Boston.

After high school, Herbert went on to study at the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts. Here he studied under Philip Hale, Frank Benson, and others. He also worked with Arthur Pope and assisted him in the preparation of color charts used with his color theory.

In 1931 Herbert Barnett graduated and went on to Europe where he studied the works of the Old Masters. After returning to the U.S. in 1933 he started giving private lessons in painting and drawing at Gloucester and New York. During this period, in 1938, he was awarded the Lambert Purchase Prize from the Pennsylvania Academy.

In 1940 Herbert Barnett was appointed head of the School of the Worcester Art Museum. In 1944 he was an instructor of painting at the University of Vermont. In 1946-1951 he taught at Clark University. In 1948 he started teaching at the Yale Summer School (Norfolk Art School), and one year later became its director. In 1950 he won the Hallmark International Award. It was in 1951 that Herbert Barnett was appointed Dean of the Cincinnati Art Academy. Since 1958 he has also held the position of Professor of Art (adjunct) at the University of Cincinnati.

Herbert Barnett's works are owned by numerous museums including Cincinnati Art Museum and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.

Herbert Barnett is an Honorary Active Member of the Cincinnati Art Club.

Herbert Barnett was an American artist whose life and work was closely tied to New England, and yet his distinctive style of painting draws upon both the American tradition of representation and the artistic innovations of the Cubists. He is known as a painter of extraordinary ability and a virtuoso draftsman, whose works are included in numerous public and private collections across the country.

Born in Cranston, Rhode Island, Barnett grew up in Providence. While still in high school, he began to study painting at the Rhode Island School of Design. From 1927-31, he studied at the Boston Museum School and soon acquired a reputation for technical proficiency. At seventeen, he had his first one-man show at the Grace Horne Gallery in Boston and was already teaching private classes. After art school, where he won the Paige Travelling Fellowship, Barnett spent three years traveling and studying in Europe. From the time of his return to the United States in 1934 until 1940, he divided his time between Cape Ann, Massachusetts and New York City.

As he assimilated what he had learned in Europe and absorbed the influence of the older generations of American painters, notably Marsden Hartley, Walt Kuhn and Edward Hopper, Barnett's style evolved rapidly. By 1939, his painting possessed characteristics that would remain relatively constant in his further development. He began each painting by quickly drawing with the brush to capture the basic contours of his subject. Next, he made a tonal underpainting in oil wash to indicate the most prominent volumes as areas of light and shadow. The painted surface consists of a pattern of discreet, rectangular brushstrokes. Barnett's emphasis on structure reflects his admiration for Cezanne and the Cubists.

In the late 1930s, Barnett's bold and expressive figure paintings and Cape Ann landscapes brought him recognition. His exhibitions at Boston and New York galleries won his critical acclaim. By 1940, several museums had already acquired his canvases and given him one-man shows.

In 1940, he became the head of the Worcester Museum School and began summering in Vermont, where he produced a distinctive group of landscapes of quarries, farms, bridges and mills. In 1951, Barnett became dean of the Art Academy of Cincinnati, the school of the Cincinnati Art Museum, and was soon honored with a retrospective exhibition at the museum. From the 1950s, Herbert Barnett's work continued to evolve toward a more refined statement of his personal vision. Until his death in 1972, he remained at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, returning to central Massachusetts each summer to paint.

Among American painters, Barnett most admired Marsden Hartley, particularly for his late Maine seascapes. Like Hartley, Barnett found the work of Ralph Waldo Emerson an important intellectual and spiritual source. The Emersonian tradition was essential to his love of the New England countryside. Speaking of the artist in general, Barnett wrote in 1965, "This artist is not really painting subject matter, he is painting an abstract idea. …His goal is not to capture the subject but to go far beyond it into a calm, timeless, nameless, picture-governed world."

A major memorial exhibition took place at the Cincinnati Art Museum in the winter of 1972-73. Subsequently, exhibitions have been held at the Fitchburg Art Museum, the New Britain Museum of American Art, the Robert Hull Fleming Museum of the University of Vermont, and the Worcester Art Museum. Although, the artist sold approximately 700 paintings and drawings during his lifetime, the estate is fortunate to contain many of the finest examples of his work. Childs Gallery has represented Barnett exclusively since 1978.

Barnett's work is represented in many public and private collections including the National Collection of Fine Arts, Washington, DC; the Worcester Art Museum, Mass.; the Cincinnati Art Museum, Ohio; Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia; Art Institute of Chicago; Mead Art Center, Amherst College, Mass.; University of Arizona Museum of Art, Tuscon; Maier Museum, Randolph Macon College, Lynchburg, Va.; Art Academy of Cincinnati, Ohio; New Britain Museum of American Art, Ct.; and the Robert Hull Fleming Museum, University of Vermont.
