This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| Known as a painter of North Dakota landscapes, portraits and still
lifes, Ida Zoe Beiler was born in Elida, Ohio, and came to North Dakota
in 1931 when she became Director of the Art Department at the State
Teachers College in Dickinson. For twenty-two years, she was an
important influence in the state and had a reputation as one of North
Dakota's finest artists.
She had not been a serious artist until
her graduation from Lima Lutheran College followed by study at Michigan
State Normal College at Ypsilanti. For more than a decade, she was
supervisor of art in Michigan and Ohio schools, and in 1926, entered
the Art Institute of Chicago. She graduated four years later with
honors, and in 1945 earned an M.F.A. from the University of Chicago.
She
exhibited widely in North Dakota and in 1949 was awarded the American
Artists Professional League's Citation Award. Her work is in the
Capitol Building in Bismarck and the Fargo Agricultural College.

| Notes from the Discussion Board:
When
Zoe Beiler was teaching at Dickinson in the Thirties, she was an
important influence on Bob Scriver. Though she was a Fauvist painter
and Bob turned out to be a realistic sculptor, she still urged him to
become an artist -- advice he didn't take for twenty years.
When Bob
was in Chicago, she took him through the studio of Laredo Taft, which
made a huge impression on him.
