Sadly...I want to inform you of the death of Neil Boyle, at 2pm pst
Saturday Feb. 4th. Neil died as the direct results of esophageal
cancer which he fought valiantly. For the last few years, Neil lived in
the city of Courtenay on Vancouver Island, Canada. Prior to that,
he lived in and around Los Angeles for 50 years. Starting in the early
50's he attended Art Center and then Chouinard Art Institute, where I
met him. He worked in several illustration studios but was one of the
early founders of Group West. I was with him for ten years there. He
was one of the most innovative illustrators in the U.S. and was
president of the Society of Illustrators of LA and recipient of their
life achievement award.
We were close friends for fifty years, and when he became ill and
nothing seemed to help, I visited him for a week, not because he was
dying but because he was living as only he did. We spent a great
week together talking about old times, current art trends, friends,
parties and humor. He was one of the 'not naturally' funny people
that I ever knew. Recently he was giving a painting class and a
woman said that she was having trouble with a likeness in a portrait
she was painting. Neil told her not to worry. She should
wait till the person died and take a rubbing.
My own repertoire of humor is full of things he said to me over the
years. Neil didn't want to hear syrupy things about his illness
and when he told me of his dilemma, I immediately sent him a found
object sculpture where I mounted an old baseball glove in a wood box
and in the glove was the most chewed up, beat up, nasty baseball.
Scrabble letters above the glove stated: "I've caught something and I
think it's really bad." Something humorous and personal that expressed
my sadness but reflected the humor we shared. I'll miss him like no
other.

|  A fine-art painter of various subjects including figure and frontier
genre, Neil Boyle has been an illustrator and art teacher.
Workshop and teaching venues include the Scottsdale Artists' School in
Arizona, the California Art Institute, the Chouinard Art Institute, the
Art Center College of Design, and California State University at Long
Beach and Northridge. In 2002, he was honored as a Signature
Member of the Oil Painters of America.
He received his formal
art education from the Banff School of Fine Art and at the Chouinard
Art Institute and the Art Center College of Design.
He had a twenty-year career in commercial illustration including for the Saturday Evening Post, Reader's Digest, Good Housekeeping, the Rand Corporation, Walt Disney Productions, the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Post Office.
Over thirty of his paintings are in the U.S. Air Force Historical Art Collection in the Smithsonian Institute and the Pentagon.
He
has earned an Award of Excellence from the Oil Painters of America,
from the Federation of Canadian Artists' Faces and Figures Juried
Exhibition, and third place in figurative painting in the California
Art Club's Gold Medal Show. He has also been awarded the Lifetime
Achievement Award from the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles.
In February 2006, Neil Boyle died as a result of esophagel cancer. He was living in Vancouver Island, Canada.

| Neil Boyle, originally from Ft. MacLeod in Alberta, Canada, grew up in Indian Country. His father, an honorary Chief of the Blood of Piegan tribes of Canada's Blackfoot Confederacy, handed down a knowledge of Indian life and history that colors Boyle's paintings of the early West with unusual authenticity. Boyle now recreates scenes from the past in oils, bronze sculptures and watercolors.
Boyle received his education at the Banff School of Fine Arts in Alberta, Canada, at the Chouinard Art Institute and the Art Center College of Design, both in Los Angeles. He has since taught at both schools in Los Angeles, and has held associate professorships at the University of California at Long Beach and at the University of California at Northridge.
Neil Boyle's vibrant oils and vigorous bronzes have gained a reputation for being among the finest in American art. Concentrating on Western art, Mr. Boyle has work in galleries in London, Calgary, Laguna Beach, and in many private and corporate collections.
Four Neil Boyle paintings were selected for the United States Bicentennial commemorative stamp series, and he is also the recipient of numerous art awards. In September 1984, a 146' by 28' mosaic tile work by him was unveiled at the Mount Sinai Cemetary in Glendale, California. Depicting the history of the Jewish people in America from 1655 to the present, the mural began as a painting by Boyle. The finished painting was then converted into a mosaic mural containing approximately 12 million pieces of Venetian glass.
Over forty of Mr. Boyle's paintings may be found in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institute and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.
The artist is presently devoting his time and talent to creating paintings and sculptures. |

| Neil Boyle, of Fort Macleod, Alberta, Canada, first studied at Banff School of Fine Arts. He continued his studies at Chouinard and Art Center School of Design in Los Angeles. He is a successful illustrator, having done work for many major publications and corporations such as The Ford Motor Company, Rand Corporation, Reader's Digest and Cosmopolitan.
Four of his works were chosen by the U.S. Postal Service for the commemorative Bicentennial stamp series, "Contributors to the Cause", and over forty of his works have been chosen for the U.S. Air Force historical exhibits in the Smithsonian and the Pentagon and Traveling Show.
Neil Boyle has taught at Chouinard Institute, Art Center School of Design, California State University Long Beach, and California State University, Northridge.
