Biography from Edgartown Art Gallery:
| As you walk into Jean Barrows‚ living room, you cannot miss the large oil painting of Niatross. The great stallion is posed simply but elegantly and the presence of the World Champion pacer seems to emanate from each brushstroke.
"This horse knew he was the best", Barrows explains, "and it's his strength and self confidence that I emphasized in his portrait."
Across the room is a small painting of a huge horse. His massive body is foreshortened. As he turns his head, the muscles of his great neck crease behind his jaw. Forrester, a Shire stallion, is eighteen hands of pure power, but his eye belies a very gentle soul.
"Horses, as do all animals, have distinct personalities," insists Barrows, "and I seem to have an innate ability to pick up on their essence, even if I can only spend a short amount of time with them."
Barrows‚ ability to connect with animals shines through in her exquisite oil paintings, which have won her numerous awards and an international clientele.
She is an signature member of the prestigious American Academy of Equine Art. Her work appears on the covers and editorials of leading magazines including "The Equine Image", "The Canine Image", "Equus", "Hoofbeats", "The Chronicle" and several breed publications.
The United States Equestrian Team also features her paintings in its note card collection.
The artist comes by her affinity with horses quite naturally, as her colorful family history might suggest. Through her mother, Barrows traces her lineage to the first Earl of Crawford, champion jousting knight of Scotland. |
