This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| Inspired by the natural landscape and movement in nature, Jeanne Bellmer, paints abstract landscapes using a wet on wet technique.
Born in Oakland in 1920 Nancy Bellmer (nee Yule) was always interested in art. She attended the California College of Arts & Crafts and the Livingston School of Design before beginning a career in fashion illustration.
In 1942 Jeanne Bellmer married and her life changed focus as she raised two children. It was not until she was in her forties that she began painting again. She started with portraiture classes that she attended near her home. When she and her husband moved to Carmel she decided to sign up for more classes at the local art center. Because the portrait class was full she ended up in a watercolor course taught be Nancy Johnson.
Not only did Bellmer fall in love with watercolors, but she found a dear friend in Nancy Johnson who inspired her and cultivated her artistic ability. She continued to take workshops with such teachers as Rex Brandt and Robert E Wood as well as read as much as she could about watercolor painting technique.
In 1967 Nancy Bellmer sold her first painting and two years later she was accepted as a member of the Carmel Art Association. In 1994 she would become a lifetime member of the organization.
In 1971 she had her first two-woman show with her teacher, Nancy Johnson. In 1976 an 1977 she exhibited with the American Watercolor Society and was included in their nationwide touring exhibition.
