This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| The following was submitted October 2003 and updated January 2006 by
Carol Franzosa, owner of several World War One Vintage Airplane prints
by this artist.
Jerome Biederman was born February 1, 1913 in Braddock, Pennsylvania.
He was a graduate of Chicago's American Academy Of Art. He maintained
studios in Pittsburgh, San Francisco, and Nashville during his career.
Biederman
was employed as a commercial illustrator. In 1961 he became art
director for Wen-Mac Corporation, a major American manufacturer of toy
gas-powered flyable aircraft. After three years he resigned his
position there in order to devote more time to transportation art
rather than just transportation.
Mr. Biederman's chosen
subject matter included vintage automobiles, railroad locomotives,
steam boats, fire engines and aviation. Biederman's primary income
source was a revenue stream generated from selling rights to use the
transportation paintings to print producers and publishers. Calendars
were produced with the prints from these historical and nostalgic
paintings and individual prints suitable for framing were marketed by
others through advertisement in various automotive magazines and media
publications.
A commercial credit of Biederman's includes his design of the Ed Wynn type fire chief helmet for Texaco.
A
wonderful article entitled, "Classic Cars Of The '30s", featured six
Biederman paintings. It reappeared last in "The Best From Playboy"
Volume 2, a 1968 republication from the first August, 1961 publication.
In
the late 1960's Biederman automobile centerfolds were published in
several "Horseless Carriage Gazette" publications and a summary of his
growing transportation collection appeared in "Horseless Carriage
Gazette" Nov/Dec 1970 publication.
"Automobile Quarterly" Vol
4 No. 2 contains five full page automobile images and the article, "A
Venerable Five Painted By Jerome Biederman".
The 1970
biography from the Pentagon states of Biederman, "His work is widely
distributed in the forms of books, magazines, prints, calendars.
Additionally, he exhibits widely and his original paintings are to be
found in the hands of private collectors, museums, corporations, and
individuals throughout the United States. He retains one of the largest
private collections existent."
Biederman's World War II airplanes were exhibited in Washington D. C. at the Smithsonian Institute for six years in the 1950's.
Biederman
was commissioned to paint WW I combat scenes which were exhibited at
the National Air Museum in Dayton, Ohio. These paintings became a
corporate donation to The Air Force Art Collection in 1970 which
resides in Washington D. C.
There is a substantial portion of
the entire collection of original leased paintings which remains
intact. The work represents a veritable chronology of transportation
covering a large segment of the twentieth century.
