JIM BOYER
Living in Santa Fe, NM
Coming to New Mexico to work as a scientist at Los Alamos, he was inspired by the brilliant light and dramatic skies to return to his early love of landscape painting, which he does primarily "en plein aire," meaning he completes the work on site.
In Santa Fe, he attends workshops offered by professional artists including Doug Higgins and Irby Brown, and joins on regular painting excursions, a group of landscape painters committed to experiencing nature directly for their subject matter.
He also visits museum and gallery exhibits and carefully studies art books and exhibition catalogs; he is particularly inspired by the contemporary California impressionist painters.
While Jim believes strongly in direct study from nature, he sometimes paints in the studio from the location paintings, photographs, memory, and even from imagination. The studio also allows him to paint on a larger scale and to explore innovative concepts.
But painting on location adds an emotional immediacy to the painting as well as providing insight into the subtle nuances of lighting unavailable in photographs.
Boyer paints mostly in northern New Mexico but has begun traveling to other locations so that he is continually challenged by new subject matter and avoids repetition. His travels include Puerto Penasco, Mexico, Venice, Italy, Guatemala, and Canyon de Chelly, Arizona.
He grew up in a small town in southern Kentucky, which inspired a sense of freedom, a love of fresh air, and exhilaration in the outdoors.
