This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| The following, submitted December 2005, is from John B. Lima, representative of the artist, whose website is www.joaodebrito.com
Portuguese-American artist João de Brito has lived in Northern
California since 1979, yet he travels extensively throughout
California, New England, the U.S. and Portugal, Italy, South of France,
New Zealand, Mexico, Costa Rica, Canada and Asia to paint in oils en
plein aire and to sketch. From age six, he has observed and studied art
to acquire a passion for expressing himself using
impressionist/figurative views on canvas.
Though de Brito sculpts and works in ceramic, he favors painting and
incorporates his Portuguese roots along with influences of great French
fauvists and early California impressionists.
In the past several years, de Brito has toured California and Europe
with artist Mark Geller to paint coastal and inland scenes. De Brito
spent three years as an understudy to Capitola’s William B. Hannum, a
highly regarded best-selling artist of Carmel’s Artist Association.
De Brito has become well-known for his use of vibrant colors that
elicit light, life and energy. Intended to unleash a fresh creativity –
inspired by memories of his homeland, scenes from the East and West
Coast, and his many travels abroad – de Brito creates oil paintings to stimulate the
sense of sight to produce emotion and thought.
Of late, de Brito’s works are represented by galleries in Capitola and
Santa Cruz California, Provincetown Cape Cod, Massachusetts, New
Zealand, Oakland, California, and Roswell, Georgia.
Along the way, he has been the featured and solo artist, and held
several one-man shows. De Brito is also a member of the Santa Cruz Art
League, Provincetown Art Association, and The Beachcombers Club, a
private arts association based in Provincetown.
De Brito was born in the Island of St. Michael in the Azores, and as a
young man immigrated with his family to the East Coast of the United
States. In 1982, the artist settled in California’s Monterey Peninsula. Though he admits to often ‘swimming
against the current,’ his painting philosophy is to awaken hope, invoke
a sense of well-being and share colors of life.
Prior to focusing solely on his artistic talents, de Brito spent many
years in finance and public relations. As a marketing director of a
publishing firm for more than 10 years, he oversaw creative teams
focused on developing and promoting images of corporate clients. Today,
de Brito is content to quietly observe nature and to allow his images
to speak to the human heart.

Biography from Hauk Fine Arts:
| Joao de Brito was born on the Azores off the coast of Portugal. He emigrated with his family in 1958 to New England. He has exhibited on both coasts and now makes his home in California.
Influences include the French fauve painters and early California Impressionists, including E. Charlton Fortune. He also has studied the Society of Six, more notably the work of August Gay and Selden Gile, as well as the Azorean artist Domingos Rebelo and Portuguese painters Vieria de Silva and Paula Rego. In 2008 he exhibited with Nathan Oliveira, Mel Ramos and John Mattos in an exhibit titled ``Ashes to Life: A Portuguese American Story in Art.'' The exhibition inspired a book of the same title which is available in several Northern California museum book stores.
