Biography from Pearce Collections Museum:
Drawing since childhood, Joe Barbieri took high school art classes and later studied drawing, design and anatomy at Nassau College in New York and Northlake College in Texas. But it wasn't until 1994 that he discovered the joy of painting and the opportunities it offered for communication.

Beginning in watercolor, Barbieri devoured instructional books and turned to local artists and knowledgeable friends for advice, critique, and insight.

Since 1995, individuals, collectors, museum and historic hotel personnel have purchased Barbieri's paintings. Among his commissioned works are a series of Western paintings and a 120 inch mural depicting a cattle drive for the historic Driskill Hotel in Austin. He recently completed an 8 inch x 12 inch canvas of an 1850's riverboat scene for an historic Houston hotel, currently undergoing restoration.

In 1998 Barbieri began design work and glass painting at Stanton Glass Studio, whose work is seen all over the Southwest. The following year he moved into oil painting, his preferred medium.

Barbieri recently studied under CA artist, Ron Riddick in his "Painting with a Passion" workshop at the Cowboy Artists of America Museum. He was the only student from that workshop to receive a full scholarship for research and development to the 2001 Prix de West Invitational Exhibition at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum.

Also in 2001 he was invited to show his work at the Mountain Oyster Club Show and Sale in Tucson, Arizona. In the spring of 2002 his paintings were shown in the Phippen Museum Show and Sale in Prescott, Arizona.

Barbieri enjoys painting portraits, landscapes of the Southwest and still lifes, but much of his inspiration is taken from the agrarian community where he lives with his wife and five children. He is daily surrounded by scenes of draft-horse teams planting or cultivating corn or harvesting wheat, families working their gardens, or a group of men -young and old - rounding up and branding calves. He hopes to communicate through his work the vibrancy of the natural world and the simplicity and beauty of the life and relationships he enjoys in rural Texas.
