Johannes Boesen was the nephew of A.V. Boesen. He studied under P.C. Skovgaard and later attended the Danish Academy from 1863 until 1871. He began exhibiting in 1868. His painting, View of Nörreport, won the Neuhausen award in 1869. The same prize was awarded to him for his work, Sunrise, in 1875.
He received a travel award in 1886 and visited Germany, Belgium, and Holland.
Boesen was primarily a painter of landscapes.
