Biography from Hauk Fine Arts:
| John Arthur Bargquist, an illustrator and artist, was born in Chicago,
Illinois on Oct. 14, 1889. A second-generation descendant of
Swedish immigrants, Bargquist studied at the Chicago Art Institute.
Bargquist
inherited his artistic talent from his father, John August Bargquist,
who went from logging trees in Sweden to carving wood tables in the
United States, and from his mother, Ida Matilda, who was a quilter.
Bargquist spent nearly his entire career as an illustrator for Popular Mechanics Magazine
in Chicago. His fine art includes landscapes and portraits done
in watercolor and oil. His landscapes depict the Illinois,
Wisconsin, Indiana and Missouri countryside, as well as scenes of
Chicago and Lake Michigan.
He died on Oct. 3, 1966, in Chicago.
