 A Scottish painter, born into a family of fishermen and boat builders, he uses his native background for his often allegorical paintings of the human condition. Bellany went to London in 1965 to study at the Royal College of Art, and is now a member of the Royal Academy, as well as a Commander of the British Empire. His work is in the collections of the Tate Gallery, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, among others.
