This biography from the Archives of AskART:
A resident of San Bernadino, California, John Budicin is a realist and impressionist plein-air landscape painter who loves to capture sunset views "en plein air." As a member of the Plein Air Painters of America, he is part of a group of California painters committed to painting the special beauty of the California landscape and cityscapes at the moment they are beheld.

He was born in the Italian city of Rovigno and spent his early years as a World War II war refugee in Rome and then moved to Southern California in 1955 at the age of 12. His artistic talent was obvious in high school and Riverside Community College, but he married and pursued commercial art rather than fine art.

He took mail-order illustration courses from the Famous Artists' School, and eventually found work at Harris' department store in San Bernardino. He became the store's art director and advertising manager and then had ten years as a freelance illustrator of furniture, house wares, and Oriental rugs for Robinson's and Bullock's stores throughout the California region.

On the side, he began to paint still lifes and then, inspired by the painting of Walt Gonske in New Mexico, was taken with the idea of plein-air painting. At Gonske's recommendation, he took a workshop from Taos painter, Ray Vinella, and then painted with Kevin Macpherson and other New Mexico artists. From that time, he has turned away from illustration to devote himself exclusively to fine art painting.

Budicin is a signature member of the California Arts Club, the Plein Air Painters of America, the Oil Painters of America, and the Laguna Plein Air Painter’s Association. He has served as President of the Plein Air Painters of America.

Budicin has won numerous major awards in open juried shows within the past few years, including six gold medals and first place awards. He has recently had three one person shows, and has his work included in museum shows in California and Arizona. His work has been featured in articles in Art of the West, American Artist, Southwest Art, and The Quarterly Magazine.
