| John was born and raised in the high desert town of Sparks, Nevada. His young years were spent drawing and learning about art from his schoolteacher Barbara Murdock. Mrs. Murdock instilled within John a desire to create, and make art a lifetime pursuit. It was this inspiration that led him to fulfill his dream.
In 1992 John graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, specializing in Illustration. After a few years he began to realize success by securing national clients such as: Citibank, U.S. Postal Service, Prudential, Simon & Schuster.
His passion for backpacking, fishing and hiking eventually brought him back to painting the thing he knew and lovedthe outdoors. John's paintings capture the subtlety and beauty of nature, his work also often portrays environments that are void of the sign of man. Inspiration for John's paintings is drawn from his extensive travels throughout the Western United States, and his observations of nature during hiking and fishing trips.
Painters such as Maynard Dixon, The Group of Seven and Victor Higgins influence the young artist. He employs bold strokes with a palette knife and rich colors to capture the essence and mood of his subjects. His style is intended to show depth and energy, leaving the viewer with a distinct impression of the emotion John feels for his subject matter. John has said, "The Western landscape is deeply imbedded in the fiber of my being. Growing up in the West has always had an impact on the art I create. I strive to show a reverence for the land and its beauty by simplifying the shapes and forms in front of me. The West is large and slow, a lifetime of painting could only begin to touch upon its mystery and subtlety, and it is upon this premise that I make my life's work".
