| Joseph Binder was born in Vienna, Austria in 1898. Binder studied at the Vienna School of Arts & Crafts. After immigrating to the U.S. in the early 1930s, he was guest lecturer at the Art Institute of Chicago, Minneapolis School of Art, and taught at Chouinard Art School, Los Angeles, in 1933-35 and Pasadena Art Institute in 1944. He settled in New York in 1944, became an American citizen, and in 1948 the U.S. Navy made him their art director and designer.
