This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| The following is from the artist:
Born December 17, 1944, and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, Joy Beckner attended Washington University School of Fine Arts in her hometown. She pursued professions in fashion at Famous-Barr and later ran her fund-raising business, Joy of Youth. In the late 1980's opportunity and spirit were right for Joy to return to art.
A 1990 sculpture class reawakened her love for modeling clay into the human form. With encouragement from her husband, Brian, Joy began the process of becoming a fine artist through formal education, five college hours of sculpture in a year and half, job experience, and interpersonal relationships.
Beckner is a modeler, modeling clay or wax into the desired form. When the clay is finished she has a mold made, and the piece is cast using the lost-wax casting method.
She created fourteen bas-relief portraits in bronze for the National Cosmetology Association from 1993 through 1998. From Fall 1995 through 1998, she evolved into a full-time sculptor. In Fall 2000, Beckner accepted an invitation to join the American Women Artists as a full member, while in 1999, she was elected to membership in The Society of Animal Artists, The Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club and The Pen & Brush.
In fall 1999, she earned the National Sculpture Society's Silver Medal and the John Cavanaugh Memorial Prize. Purchase awards have permanently placed her work in public collections including the American Kennel Club Museum of the Dog, in St. Louis, MO, and the Library of Hattiesburg, Petal & Forrest County, Hattiesburg, MS. Her first two-person show was at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.
Joy's series of life-sized dachshunds, inspired by her own "kids," have earned her national recognition and numerous awards, including four Best-in-Shows! Her bronze dachshunds are in worldwide collections of those who love everything from Chihuahuas to Great Danes.
