This biography from the Archives of AskART:
From her East Village, New York studio Kathy Butterly creates small ceramic sculptures that are cartoonish, beautiful and grotesque. The artist creates the sculptures in response to her surroundings and topics of the day. They contain elements of classic and Asian art.

Butterly grew up in Bergen County, New Jersey and attended Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia where she studied painting and sculpture. She was turned on to ceramics when she attended a workshop by Viola Frey, a Bay area sculptor who works in ceramics.

After college Butterly traveled throughout Asia and then pursued a master's degree from the University of California, Davis where she was a student of Robert Arneson, a California Funk Artist who also influenced her choice of ceramics as a medium.

Butterly's early work took the form of vessels and she does some drawings and collage to complement her ceramic work.

In 2004, 25 of her small sculptures were selected for the Carnegie International and in the fall of 2005 she will have a solo show at Skidmore College's Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery.
