| Kenneth Perrin Becker was born in Berwyn, Illinois in 1913, the son of a lithography company executive. He had serious asthma as a child and his father took him on many trips to Wyoming, New Mexico and Arizona, among other destinations, to alleviate the symptoms of his breathing problems. As a result of the travel, Ken developed a passionate love for the western and southwestern territory, mountains and deserts and old shacks, adding to his appreciation of his own midwestern landscape.
