Biography from Thornwood Gallery:
Kevin Box grew up beneath "the tree that escaped the crowded forest," referring to Frank Lloyd Wright's only skyscraper in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.   There he developed an early passion for creativity and realizing his “Visions” through art.  Aesthetically, he didn’t fall far from Mr. Wright’s tree.

With a growing interest in design and printmaking, he apprenticed for his uncles graphic design firm in Atlanta, Georgia.  Gaining valuable experience in digital graphics and marketing, it also brought him the realization that most graphic design for print and packaging ended up as landfill trash.

Refocusing on Fine Art, he spent three years studying Art and Art History at the School of Visual Arts in Savannah, Georgia, later finishing his BFA at their prestigious New York campus.

In 1999, Box began his career in the foundry.  Bronze spoke his artistic language, what he refers to as "Deep time conversation, a long distance dialogue.”  It would become his medium of choice.  Over the next three years he labored under a self imposed apprenticeship to become proficient in bronze casting.  By working within the industry for sculptors and foundries, he attained an exhaustive knowledge of the casting techniques and fabricating process necessary to create monumental works of art.  Eventually his dedication to the process helped build one of the largest fine art foundries in Texas.  Box took every opportunity within this context to develop his own work.

Eventually supporting himself full time through his craft, Box began placing numerous works of art in public, private and corporate collections.  In 2004 he was elected as the youngest member of the National Sculptors Guild and was recognized by Southwest Art Magazine as one of the top 21 artists under 31 in the Southwest.  He has won numerous awards and continues to place larger and larger public projects.  He currently lives and works with his wife Jennifer in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

His knowledge of process combined with a vision for innovation defines the style and sensibility of Box’s work as it establishes a place within contemporary art history.

Artist Statements:

Graduating from the School of Visual Arts in New York did not fully prepare me for what lay ahead in my career as a sculptor.  Teachers became mentors, jobs became apprenticeships and work became passion.  Today my wife Jennifer and I live in Santa Fe, New Mexico where we live the dream of creating artwork for people we may never have the pleasure of meeting.

In the world we live in today, I am privileged in the work that I do.  Creativity is a powerful exercise that magnifies and strengthens those who participate in it and I enjoy the challenge of combining my vision with the needs of my clients.  Art provides an opportunity unlike any other for interaction, influence and the exchange of ideas.  I believe it is an historic dialogue that continues to connect the content of our humanity across generational, geographical and linguistic divides.  Art should engage us in a memorable exchange and it is my goal to achieve this through my selection of materials, locations, compositions and meaningful concepts that people can identify with.
2009

My work celebrates the delicate nature of paper in museum quality bronze.  Beginning with a piece of paper, compositions emerge from my desire to describe the architecture of the soul and the nature of creativity.   By combining paper, wax and contemporary casting techniques I developed while working in the foundry, each piece is cast into bronze and finished with refined patinas that recall aged parchment. Paper planes, origami, crumpled ideas and innovative abstraction are all themes contained within a portfolio that I continue to unfold.

There is no folded image more recognized than the origami crane, a meaningful and worthwhile symbol of peace to many people.  It takes one intentional decision after another to create, so too does a state of peace.  It is achieved, not by accident but through careful decisions.

As an artist, I look at a piece of paper as perfect potential, a clean slate.  This potential is activated by light and shadow as each decision creases the paper.  Compositions emerge from my interest in geometry and light as I describe the mathematical design of decisions just beneath the surface of form.  Cast into museum quality bronze, each piece celebrates the delicate nature of paper in a unique dialogue of materials and concepts. I am intrigued artistically by the unfolding of origami designs as a symbol of this relationship. By completely unfolding any origami design you find what is known commonly as the “crease pattern.” What I see is not common but extraordinary. The crease pattern is a document of decisions, a history of actions, preserved in the memory of the paper.  It can be seen in the base of the “Crane Unfolding” it is the “star of the crane,” the blueprint of its creation.  This sculpture stands as the signature piece within a body of work that celebrates the delicate nature of decisions preserved in paper and realized in museum quality bronze.
