Biography: Written by Lou Bonamarte the artist:
Lou Bonamarte was born in New London, Connecticut, a deep river port, in 1933. He spent many years roaming the piers and shoreline not far from his home, sketching and painting in watercolor. He graduated from high school and received the Dr. Lena award for excellence in art.
In 1953 he volunteered for the draft and served two years in the U.S. Army attached to the Special Services Division, Headquarters Company Fort Carson, Colorado. He left the Army in 1955 with an honorable discharge and moved to New York to further pursue his obsession with fine art. He studied watercolor with John Pike and soon after became a member of Grand Central Art Galleries under the direction of Erwin Barrie.
In 1975, Lou Bonamarte and two other artists founded the Lyme Academy of Fine Art, Old Lyme, Connecticut.
Bonamartes works have exhibited from coast to coast, including Canada, Paris, France, and The American Consulate in Hong Kong. His solo shows include Slater Museum in Norwich, Lyman Allen Museum, New London, CT., Grand Central Art Galleries, Mystic Seaport Maritime Gallery, Mystic, CT.
His work has appeared in national exhibitions such as Ebell Art Society, Los Angeles, Sears Tower, Chicago, Salem Maritime Museum, Lincoln, MA., Big Horn Galleries, Jackson, WY., He has been an exhibiting artist at the Maritime Gallery of the Mystic Seaport Museum since its inception in 1979.
