This biography from the Archives of AskART:

Louis Belzile is a painter and sculptor who was born in Rimouski, Quebec.  His mediums are oils, acrylic, bronze, concrete and mixed mediums.  His subjects are mostly abstract non-objective and semi abstract political commentary figures.  His styles are lyrical abstraction, geometric abstraction, abstract expressionism and  semi-abstract.

He studied at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto (1948 –1952); with André L’hote in Paris (1953 – 1954); at the University of Montreal (1958) earning a B.A. degree; and at l’ Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Montreal (1960 – 1961).

He was the co-founder of a group called ”Les Plasticiens” which authored a “Manifesto Artists” in Montreal in 1955; the focus of which was to explore space in lyrical abstract paintings by incorporating hard-edged structured planes, geometric abstraction and light.  The other members of the group were Rodolphe de Repentigny, an art critic and artist who signed his paintings “Jauran”, Jean-Paul Jerome and Fernand Toupin.  He was also a member of the Association des Artistes Non Figuratifs de Montreal (1956 –1961).

He has exhibited his work in hundreds of solo and group shows since 1952 in venues that include the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts; the Salon des Independants, Paris; the Museum of Modern Art, Paris; the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Musee d'art contemporain de Montreal.

His works are in numerous private, corporate and public collections.  Some of the public collections are the National Gallery of Canada, the Musée d'art contemporain de Montreal, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and the Museum of Quebec (Quebec City).

As a prominent Canadian artist his work is discussed in many books about Canadian art history, there are also numerous magazine and newspaper articles. He is listed in A Dictionary of Canadian Artists (1974), by Colin S. MacDonald, published by Canadian Paperbacks Ltd. (8 volumes); in The Collector's Dictionary of Canadian Artists at Auction (2001), by Anthony R. Westbridge and Diana L. Bodnar, published by Westbridge Publications Ltd. (4 volumes); and in Visions – Contemporary Art in Canada (1983), various authors and editors, published by Douglas & McIntyre (239 pgs, color).
