Louis Biloul (1874 – 1947)
Louis François Biloul was born in Paris in 1874. He was a student of Jean-Paul Laurens and Benjamin Constant.
Biloul exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1900 until 1938. He was the recipient of the Prix de Rome in 1901. He won many medals over the years and was awarded Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur in 1926. He was a member of the jury of the Société des Artistes Français.
Biloul painted primarily nudes. He used rich tones and a style that shows an academic discipline but his models were decidedly modern. His paintings were often large formats, which exhibited certain decadence. This style and subject were widely popular in the Paris Salons. Some critics called it “Boudoir Art”, but the galleries exhibited these very French nudes to the delight of collectors then and now.
