The father of painter and illustrator Bernard Boutet de Monvel, he was born in Orleans, France in 1851, and became the most popular French illustrator of the late 19th Century. He studied with Carolus Duran in Paris, and his work appeared in Century Magazine in the 1890s. He was also a well-known illustrator of children's books in France, as well as in England and the U.S. Maurice Boutet de Monvel died in 1913, in Nemours, France.
