| Louis S. Bacon was born in France in 1814. After participating in the French revolution of 1848, Bacon decamped when the uprising failed and landed in San Francisco in the early 1850s. At his studio at 623 California Street, he gave drawing lessons to aspiring young artists, among them was Toby Rosenthal. Bacon was active in San Francisco until at least 1863.
