| Primarily a book illustrator, Ludwig Bemelman was also a painter of impressionist style. paintings. As an illustrator, he was known for his "Madeline" series, which began in 1939.
He was born in Austria in 1898 and attended school in Germany until 1914 when he emigrated to the United States, just before World War I. He became a citizen four years later and living in New York, became an illustrator for "The New Yorker," "Vogue," and "Holiday" magazines before focusing on book illustration which included "My War with the United States" and "Life Class". He died in 1962.
