| Luetta Elmina (Bumstead) Braumuller (1856-1898) was born December 4th, 1856 in Monson, MA. Her father was of the Boston Bumstead family, and his family was remembered in Bumstead Hall and Bumstead Place two old Boston landmarks. In 1638 her mother's family of Wood came to America. Along with other Puritans they founded the city of Rowley near Boston. Luetta's husband was a famous New York City piano manufacturer. They had two children. Luetta Braumuller began her art studies at the age of eight. She committed her life to art. She worked in all mediums with pencil and brush. Her first European travel was in 1880 to study for one year in the Berlin studios The second trip to Europe was in 1882. This year she focused only on the porcelain arts. While in Paris and Sevres she studied porcelain painting with celebrated artists of the day. The remainder of 1882 she traveled again to Berlin to study with a noted practical china and glass painter. Braumuller had a complete knowledge of porcelain art and pottery making. She was both a student and a teacher working to advance art. She published in 1882 a small book "Lessons in China Painting" to aid in her teaching.
Her publishing and married home was New York City. She decided in 1887 that a magazine would reach more people, so she began monthly publication of the "China Decorator". The amateur decorator was the demographic for this publication, and the "China Decorator" was successful and circulated in Europe and America. Luetta Braumuller traveled in 1889 to Dresden to study the methods of the Dresden artists. The last documented trip was to Paris in 1890. Here she studied flesh painting, and her works are figure painting using the techniques and methods of Hortense Richard. Throughout the United States of America she was respected as a knowledgeable expert in all areas of the porcelain art. Written and submitted February 2004 by Janet G.
