This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Santa Ana, CA on Jan. 1, 1901. Lulu Hawkins graduated from the University of Nevada and then earned an M.A. degree from UC Berkeley. She had further art training in NYC at the ASL, the Metropolitan School of Art, and the Grand Central Art School. While studying art there she married F. A. Braghetta in 1930. Returning to California in 1932, she studied at the Chouinard School of Art and became a professional sculptor with a studio in San Francisco. She contributed wall reliefs on Treasure Island for the GGIE in 1939. She taught sculpture at the CCAC (1938-42) and in 1946 set up an art department at Vallejo Jr. College where she taught until retirement in 1959. Mrs. Braghetta then lived in Sonoma, CA until her death on Oct. 28, 1992. Exh: Oakland Art Gallery, 1936 (silver medal), 1939 (gold medal); SF Art Center, 1937-42; SFAA, 1938-42; San Francisco Art Center, 1939 (solo); San Jose State College, 1939 (solo); 20th Century Club (Reno, NV), 1939 (solo). In: Yuba City (CA) Post Office (panels); Berkeley High School (exterior stone panels); Gamma Phi Beta Sorority House, Reno, NV (panels).
