Lynn Bishop was born in 1944 in Chicago, Illinois, and moved with her parents to Girard, Kansas in 1951. She loved to draw horses as a child, living next door to a horse farm, and dreamed of pursuing a career as an equine artist. However, while taking art classes at Kansas State Teachers College, Pittsburg, Kansas, from 1963-1964, she was discouraged from pursuing her desire to focus on horse art, and changed careers from art to veterinary medicine.
She received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of California, Davis, in 1972; was an intern in small animal medicine and surgery at Angell Memorial Animal Hospital, Boston, MA, from 1972-1973; and studied veterinary pathology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Division of Laboratory Animal Medicine, from 1975-1978. She became board certified as a Diplomat, American College of Veterinary Pathologists, in 1978. She taught pathology and conducted research as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Veterinary Pathology, School of Veterinary Medicine, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO, from 1979-1983, and worked in a private veterinary diagnostic laboratory from 1983-1985.
In 1982 a renewed interest in art resulted in taking classes in the Art Department, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado. In 1985 she quit veterinary medicine to pursue her art full time. She received additional training in painting and drawing during the 1980's and early 1990's by attending classes and seminars at the Loveland Academy of Fine Art, Loveland, CO, and the Art Students League of Denver, Denver, CO, by various artists, including the following: Richard Schmid, Burt Silverman, Mark Daily, Doug Dawson, Kim English, Quang Ho, Bruce Cody, John Lencicki, Ned Jacobs, Charles Cross, Kang Cho, Ramon Kelly, and David Leffel. The most important influence, however, was a six-week period of study with Charles Cecil at the Charles H. Cecil Studios, Florence, Italy, in 1993, where she learned the sight size method and classical techniques of drawing and painting.
Her work is representational in nature and focuses primarily on oil paintings and pastel, charcoal, and graphite drawings of people and animals. Most of her figurative work depicts ethnic subjects observed during travels around the world, and her animal work focuses on horses and other domestic species.
Recent exhibitions include the National Oil and Acrylic Painters' Society "Best of America! 2004" show held in November, 2004, in Osage Beach, Missouri, where her painting "Team Plus One" won Best of Show and was purchased for the permanent collection of the Ella Carothers Dunnegan Gallery of Art, Bolivar, Missouri, for their permanent collection.
Lynn was recently awarded Signature Member status in the Society of Animal Artists, a New York-based international association of animal and wildlife painters and sculptors devoted to promoting excellence in the portrayal of the creatures sharing our planet.
She taught painting at the Loveland Academy of Fine Art, Loveland, CO, in 1994 and 1995, and has given private lessons in painting and drawing.
She lives in Lakewood, CO.
